What is the PADI Master Scuba Diver?

With the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, you have reached the highest non professional level in the PADI System of diver education.

Because you have had to complete multiple courses and log at least 50 dives, it means that you have acquired significant training and experience in a variety of dive environments. How Long Does It Take?

Most of our divers decide at Advanced Open Water that they want to achieve their Master Scuba Diver rating. Therefore, they complete their PADI Rescue Diver course and 5 Specialty Courses with us, as well as diving regularly on our guided dive trips.

What’s the difference between the PADI Master Scuba Diver and Divemaster certifications?

They sound very similar, but the PADI Master Scuba Diver and the PADI Divemaster are actually two distinct qualifications.

The Master Scuba Diver is a recognition rating, meaning that you have proved you have significant experience and scuba training.

The PADI Divemaster is a professional dive leader certification, and the first step towards becoming a PADI Instructor. Divemasters assist instructors on scuba courses and can have leadership responsibilities that result in payment.

So, the PADI Master Scuba Diver is the top level of recreational dive certification, whereas the PADI Divemaster is the first step on the professional dive certification ladder.


Each course will have it’s own set of prerequisites. However, for all courses you will need to complete a:

  • Signed Liability Release and Statement of Safe Diving Practices
  • Medical Declaration form and Recreational Dive Medical if necessary
